The Zoras - Kweeeh!!! and Surf The Storms

Surf-rock outfit The Zoras recently released two scrummy tracks: “Kweeeh!!!” and “Surf The Storms.”

“Kweeeh!!!” is The Zoras’ cover of “Electric de Chocobo,” from Final Fantasy VII. The song, written by Nobuo Uematsu, was recorded and performed by Cody Johnson, with mixing and mastering handled by Will Hirst at Gate 4 Studios.

“Surf The Storms” is the cover of the song from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, written by Koji Kondo, arranged and recorded by Cody Johnson, and once again mixed and mastered by Will Hirst.

The Zoras, according to Zelda Dungeon are defined: “The Zora is a recurring race of aquatic folk in The Legend of Zelda series. There are two subspecies of Zora: River Zora and Sea Zora. Though named after their most frequented habitat, River Zora can be found in the sea and vice versa. Their main distinctions instead are their morphology and their temperament.”

I am assuming the band took their name from the characters in The Legend of Zelda. The only other available info on The Zoras is the name Cody Johnson, who I am assuming plays guitar. Ostensibly, this could be the same Cody Johnson who is a country star and signed to Warner Music. But since the other piece of info regarding The Zoras is that they come from Charlotte, Maine, I doubt it is the same Cody Johnson.

Charlotte, Maine is a very small town in Washington County, Maine. So to quote Porky the Pig, “That’s all folks!”

“Kweeeh!!!” opens on a running surf guitar reminiscent of The Ventures’ “Pipeline,” and then flows into a luminous melody full of shiny, jangly tones, as well as a plump bassline. The popping snare of the bridge, along with the guitar squeaks streaming into the coursing guitar is wonderfully tasty. Whoever Cody Johnson is, he delivers righteous licks on his axe. This guy can play.

“Surf The Storms” starts off with austere guitars, shiny yet subtle, and then shifts to gleaming platinum colors, surging with translucent hues. Bumblebee notes coalesce into a sizzling display of guitar virtuosity, leading to glistening, dripping licks.

The Zoras have it going on! Hints of The Ventures meld with innovative guitar work to produce surf-rock of galvanizing proportions.
