Reutlingen, Germany’s surf and spaghetti western outfit Herr Nielsson und seine Kapelle recently released a new album, called Bermuda. The band’s name translates to “Mr. Nielsson and his chapel.”

Formed in 2016, the band’s shared love of surf, spaghetti western and film music are what brought them together, followed by releasing their debut album, Tacos & Tequila, in June 2016.

Made up of Mr. Nielsson (guitar, harmonica), Thomas (guitar), Annika Seltengren (drums), F. Priselius (bass), D. Karlson (keyboards), Efraim Lang (keyboards, percussion), and P. Oscar (trumpet, percussion), Herr Nielsson und seine Kapelle’s sound is gloriously grand, reminiscent of The Ventures and Ennio Morricone.

With 16-tracks, Bermuda begins with a brief “Introductio” composed of emerging keyboards and gently gleaming guitars, and then flows into “Artatore,” a deliciously flavored surf-rock melody with “Fistful of Dollars” savors streaming through it. A plump pulsing bassline and crisp drums provide the rhythm, as the guitars infuse the tune with shimmering layers of shiny colors.

With Bermuda, Herr Nielsson und seine Kapelle generate tantalizing surf rock rife with elusive flavors from the best spaghetti western films.

Highlights include “Sonntag bei den Höllenlöchern,” a smooth spaghetti western-laced tune with a braying harmonica, a variety of accenting tones and penetrating glistening guitars. I love the undulating flow of this track.

“Schäferstündchen” opens on softly rippling guitars atop a measured rhythm underscored by symphonic strings, imbuing the tune with sweeping cinematic colors. “Verschollen im Bermudadreieck” blends zesty pop textures with vibrant horns and delectable surf dynamics. The result is a cheerful surf-pop tune worthy of Beach Blanket Bingo.

“Der Strand von Alang” delivers twangy western-flavored guitars atop a rumbling-lite rhythm, as glinting guitars radiate surf-pop hues blended with psychedelic textures and vivid coloration. “Blauer >Dunst” commences with elegant violins drifting on dirge-like colors, followed by heavy guitars and symphonic intonations expanding into a marvelous Italian-western-surf-rock melody.
