CAPE NOWHERE SET TO DROP ‘THE CHAMBER ECHOS’

Based in Tacoma, Washington, indie-rock/chamber pop outfit Cape Nowhere is preparing to release their first full-length LP, entitled The Chamber Echos. In anticipation of the album’s advent, Cape Nowhere recently released a two-track appetizer.

Speaking about the album, frontman Andrew Graham shares, “In many ways, the album is about losing connection with the people you love. I think this current moment of cautious reconnection is something that the two songs at the end of the album (‘The Chamber Echos’ and ‘The Room’) are really about. So at this moment, I think the album lines up nicely with where the band is at. We're thawing out, stretching, and opening up to the possibility that something new and important is on the horizon.”

Formed in 2015, Cape Nowhere is made up of Andrew Graham (vocals, guitar), Brady McCowan (drums), Anand Landon (bass), and Johnny-come-lately Kaleb DePoister (lead guitar). The band’s previous releases include Short Songs for Long Days and Gloomwater.

The first preview track is “Winter in the North,” which opens on austere guitar tones riding a stark and simple rhythm composed of taut percussion and a rounded bassline. Dreamy vocals infuse the lyrics with wafting textures, rich and melancholic, mirroring the conclusion of a long-distance relationship. The feel and mood of the song exude the misty veil of heartbreak while construing emotional eventualities.

“Frozen roses holding poses by the road / A windless day / Still as death they say / Icing over, total closure, growing cold, the pointless hope / That you would meet me halfway / And in the presence of a different kind of light / I turned away.”

While the song reflects the ache of lost love, it also resonates with dreary unease and anxiety of isolation currently encompassing America.

According to Andrew, “That’s one of the reasons I love songwriting. You can write a song with no specific intention and not understand the deeper implications or how its meaning might resonate till much later. It’s like you’re trying to predict the future in some ways, and you may even help yourself unintentionally in a moment down the line.”

“Puzzlebox” features Anand on both bass and the mesmerizing guitar solo. A gleaming, jangly guitar provides the sparkling intro and then segues into a luminous melody topped by Andrew’s vibrant voice, rich and clear. I love the undulating bassline and finessed drumming on this track, especially on the glistening aura delivered by Anand’s stellar licks on lead guitar, imbuing the harmonics with shimmering optimistic energy.

“I vaguely awaken / Beneath a red sky that glows / With less limitations / As to where my mind can go / So I go, so I go.”

Deliciously wrought, both tracks demonstrate the incredible virtuosity of Cape Nowhere, encompassing both ascetic and stylish coloration.
