Once upon a time, Armstrong played with 13ghosts, an excellent band based in Alabama. Between 2000 and 2012, 13ghosts released six albums to vast praise, providing the band with national renown. Then things started to fall apart. The Bob Marley estate made a hullabaloo over the band’s version of “Three Little Birds.”

In 2012, Armstrong left 13ghosts, moving to the Hudson Valley, where he worked as a carpenter and played with the Dexateens, a garage rock band. Still, Armstrong felt dissatisfied, so he wrote the songs that ended up on his debut solo album, Empire, which garnered massive attention.

In 2018, Cornelius Chapel approached Armstrong about re-releasing Empire on vinyl. After talking with Armstrong, the label decided to not only re-release Empire, but release Armstrong’s next album, I Got No Place Remembers Me.

“Saint Lucia” is one of those gentle, creamy tunes that worm their way into your soul, full of undulating colors and half-whispered vocals, a trembling piano, and gospel-like harmonies.

Comprising a baker’s dozen of tracks, the album opens with “Brother Ford,” riding bluesy flavors topped by the delicious squall of a fiddle, and Armstrong’s Southern-inflected voice. When the tune ramps up it takes on a Charlie Daniel’s swamp-rock essence.

Entry points on the album include “13 Anchors” opening on a rousing country-rock-a-billy melody full of thick shimmering guitars radiating sparkling accents. A yummy lead guitar injects tasty licks into the song, as the driving beat pushes forward.

“Saint Lucia” is one of those gentle, creamy tunes that worm their way into your soul, full of undulating colors and half-whispered vocals, a trembling piano, and gospel-like harmonies. This is one of the album’s highlights because of its warm flow and dazzling religious-flavored harmonies.

“Fishing Pole” travels on darker, heavier surfaces, rife with resonant heft. The measured rhythm meanders and drifts on a fat bass line. The velvety glow of the vocal harmonies on this track takes your breath away – gorgeous.

I Got No Place Remembers Me provides listeners with scrumptious Americana melodies, expressive lyrics, and luscious vocals.
