Molly Thomas & The Rare Birds - Honey's Fury

Molly Thomas & The Rare Birds play a particularly tasty brand of Americana music. Music steeped in smoked whisky flavors and then dipped in southern Alabama charisma.

The band, made up of Molly Thomas (vocals, guitar, violin), Rick Hirsch (guitar), John Milham (drums), and John Keuler (bass), just dropped a new album, called Honey’s Fury. And it’s off-the-chain superb.

Thomas is renowned in Nashville for her violin work, where she’s always been an in-high-demand supporting and session musician. As such, she played with Todd Snider on Jay Leno, David Letterman, and Don Imus. She’s recorded and played live with Matthew Ryan, Guster, and Will Hoge, as well as performing at Ryman Auditorium and touring Europe.

Honey’s Fury comprises 12-tracks, and entry points include “The Boatman,” opening on a delicious violin flowing into a slow undulating melody riding a contagious rhythm. Thomas’ Southern-inflected tones glide on creamy drawling timbres, filling the lyrics with sweet resonance.

A round bass line and glittering guitar accents inject the harmonics with intimacy and emotional commitment.

“Tumbleweed” travels on gentle gleaming colors, drifting and meandering on Thomas’ evocative, rich tones. Full of wistful melancholic savors, the melody, light and sinuous, flows like an expansive river, unhurried yet irresistible. There’s a sumptuous ambience to the tune, elusive and nuanced. I love the lingering tones of the violin on this track.

“Tear It Down” rides deep energy, sensuous guitars, and a potent rhythm. Thomas’ voice takes on an assertive quality on this track, mature and rife with a slight rasping reediness, imbuing the lyrics with strident surface colors. A round bass line and glittering guitar accents inject the harmonics with intimacy and emotional commitment, especially evident on the stellar guitar solo, full of searing shadow-like hues.

“Stay Stay” features a cool, supple melody, gentle and tender, crowned by Thomas’ nasal timbres, infusing the lyrics with subtle sonic flavors.

Honey’s Fury delivers polished Americana, refined and elegantly sophisticated, along with the scrumptious violin and voice of Molly Thomas.

Molly Thomas & The Rare Birds will celebrate Honey’s Fury with a release show at Cedar Street Social Club in Mobile on June 22.
