VARNA - 'THE CRAVING'

L.A.’s hard rock outfit Varna released the lyric video for “The Craving” a while back, specifically on January 8. But it’s grand, so read on.

According to Varna, the “The Craving” is about “the push and pull of primal emotions you have instantly with someone—that carnal desire – but it never transforms into what you would like. You are stuck with the craving. Sometimes we just want what we aren't meant to have."

Still unsigned, the female fronted band has already had two singles hit Billboard’s TOP 40 Mainstream Rock chart, and shared the stage with major artists. Varna is one of those stellar bands that needs a big label, like Sony, to get their John Hancock on the dotted line.

Made up of Tiana Woods (vocals), Eddie Haddad (guitar), and Sean Moriarty (drums), Varna was born in 2010 as Living Eulogy. After the departure of Rossen Pinkas and Rob Shin, the band took the name Varna, borrowing the name of the street on which their rehearsal studio sat.

In 2013, they dropped their debut EP, This Time, It’s Personal. The first single, “Down,” from the EP made a big impact across the U.S. and the UK. The following year, the band landed sponsorship from ColdCock Whiskey and captured a spot on the VANS Warped Tour.

Woods’ voice definitely fits the rock diva designation, as she really turns it loose on hypertrophic textures, but avoids any semblance of hoarse screaming.

Since then, Varna joined Drowning Pool on the HELLELUJAH Tour, followed by opening for Adelita’s Way and Stitched Up Heart, while simultaneously working on new material in the studio.

“The Craving” opens on muscular guitar riffs riding a muscular melody. The rhythmic component provided by the bass line and Thor-like drumming surges with dynamism, as Woods’ spectacular voice spills out lush, supercharged timbres reminiscent of Amy Lee, only more rounded with a flammable resonance that’s edgy and laced with seductive savors on buff tones.

Moriarty’s skill in the pocket demands special attention. He hits like one of the Titans, but still maintains an elegant touch. And his finesse on double-bass infuses the tune with galvanizing thumping energy.

“The Craving” is excellent, full of thick impetus and beau coup aggressive sonic heft. Varna really pushes it out with oomph and dazzling gusto.
