Spray - Failure Is Inevitable

Synth-pop duo Spray will drop their fifth album May 17. Entitled Failure Is Inevitable, the album comprises 16-tracks, three of which you can now listen to on Bandcamp, as a kind of sneak preview.

Spray is made up of Ricardo Autobahn (synthesizers) and Jenny McLaren (vocals, guitars). At one point, both Autobahn and McLaren were with the technopunk band The Cuban Boys, which is now composed of Skreen B and Autobahn, who reformed the band circa 2004, and have since dropped three albums, one of which was a greatest hits compilation.

When The Cuban Boys went inactive for a while in 2001, McLaren and Autobahn formed Spray and dropped Living In Neon in 2002, followed by a single, “I Am Gothic,” in 2003, followed by another album in 2006, called Children of a Laser God. In 2010, they released “Everything’s Better With Muppets. And then in 2016, they dropped Enforced Fun.

Autobahn, aka John Matthews, gets around and is creative as all get-out. Not only is he with Spray and The Cuban Boys, but was in the duo known as Rikki & Daz, who also released music as the Barndance Boys. Their rendering of “Rhinestone Cowboy” hit the Top 20 in the UK, while “Yippie-I-Oh” hit the Top 40.

The highlight of the track is McLaren’s voice, velvety, rich, and imbued with filaments of skater-grrrl timbres, it’s a voice both tantalizing and alluring, while simultaneously rife with beau coup energy.

He co-wrote, co-produced Lolly Pop’s debut album and worked with Pop Inc, as well as Attery Squash, Helen Love, Becky, The Crimea, Nathalie Archangel, Jane Badler, and probably others no one is aware of.

Of the three available tracks from Failure Is Inevitable, “Anthologised by Cherry Red” is my favorite. All three are good, but this one is the best, in my opinion. Opening on thrumming pop-flavored guitars followed by pulsing synths the tune flows into an upbeat synth-pop number with a contagious rhythm.

McLaren told Jammerzine, “The song is not a critique of Cherry Red as we’re actually big fans of the label. It’s more a straightforward story song about a fading rock band finding success in their twilight years.” The song was initially released in 2018 as a single.

“Anthologized by Cherry Red” is a great track, propelled by vibrant synths and a tight rhythm. Spray most definitely has it going on! When the album drops, it will be worth checking out.
