“Rules,” from their forthcoming EP, Forward Motion, projects philosophical insights from Thoreau and Sartre, fostering progressive principles by means of reasoned thought and self-assessment.

Espousing gentle anarchy and moving forward, WaterPenny disrupts the musical rules to become better. Thus, in a sense, the band’s attitude resembles that of punk rockers, only tempered by reflection and wisdom. Made up of Wes Speight, Lane Patterson, and Amy Begley, since their formation last November, WaterPenny has burst onto the music scene like a bolt of lightning, setting everything in a vast radius aflame.

“Rules” opens on potent hefty colors flowing into a tasty indie-rock melody topped by a drawling harmonica and glinting guitar accents. Rumbling with tight pulsations provided by a thick bassline and finessed crisp drumming, the rhythm exudes surging energy with driving impetus.

Smooth rich vocals backed by delicious harmonies infuse the lyrics with sinuous textures and dark flavors, like unsweetened chocolate.

Smooth rich vocals backed by delicious harmonies infuse the lyrics with sinuous textures and dark flavors, like unsweetened chocolate. A short drum fill acts as the bridge to a shimmering luminous chorus full of ethereal tones, glowing on gossamer sonic filaments, followed by a muscular climax of thick heaving guitars crowned by layers of interweaving scrumptious vocal timbres.

“Any fool can make a rule / And any fool will mind it / The rules were meant to be broken / The rules were meant to be broken.”

There’s an opaque turbulent sonic oomph running through the harmonics, rolling, vibrating, and rife with muscular weight, infusing the tune with assertive vitality, as well as a mysterious symbolic reality, akin to a sense of imminence, challenging the extant conventions and regulations.

With “Rules,” WaterPenny delivers one of the best singles of the year, chockfull of aggressive guitars, an intoxicating rhythm, and grand vocals.
