Seth Beck - June

Singer-songwriter Seth Beck, who hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan, recently dropped a very tasty album, called June.

This gem was discovered during my latest Bandcamp dive, necessitating sifting through a heck-ton of really bad music, moderate amounts of tolerable music, and miniscule quantities of good music, just to find a few treasures worth 1) listening to in toto and 2) writing about.

Beck describes his music as "Indie rock fixings of yesterday transformed into scenes of romantic optimism and complication."

All the tracks on the album were written, performed, and recorded by Seth Beck, with the following exceptions: Archie Sparks plays bass on “June” and “Do You,” and reverse bass on “Moment in a Dream.” Marlo Mudd provides vocals on “Do You.” Zack Peterson aided with production, and Austin Kane (Oak Shadow Studios) and Tyler Floyd (Summit House Studios) mastered the album.

Oscillating iridescent colors tantalize, as Beck’s meditative voice glides overhead.

Comprising 9-tracks, the album opens with the title track, riding a delicate acoustic guitar topped by resonant mellow vocals exuding alluring nostalgic savors.

Standout tracks include “Mushy Magic,” which starts on glowing synths riding a measured crunching beat, and then flows into a deliciously undulating dream-pop melody full of rippling colors. Washes of gentle drifting hues enter, adding a luscious moody climate to the harmonics.

“New Drugs” travels on sparkling, gleaming tones as a spangly guitar infuses the tune with pulsing energy. I love the rhythm on this track, as the plump bass throbs atop the crisp, crackling snare. Oscillating iridescent colors tantalize, as Beck’s meditative voice glides overhead. “Moment in a Dream” demonstrates Beck’s creativity, offering up a blues-lite-flavored dream-pop melody, simple yet unexpectedly captivating.

Although “Do You” is the fourth track on the album, I saved it for last, simply because it’s so scrumptious. The flow of the music, buttery smooth, along with the marvelous vocal harmonies gives it a sensuous-lite feel.

June is superb, exuding wistful pale colors, as well as vibrant sonic accents and infectious rhythms. Seth Beck is another artist who needs to be signed.
