The ten-tracks on the album loosely intertwine, revolving around a proposition: is substituting a new pain for an old pain worth it? In other words, should one move on from familiar pain to the thrill of newness, knowing it will probably end in misfortune?

The album features the talents of the best musicians in and around Birmingham, Alabama, including members of The Dexateens and Vulture Whale, and merges savors of cosmic country, honky tonk funk, and alt-rock into spellbinding musical concoctions.

Beginning with the title track, a creamy drawling country tune reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, only with more twang, you know you’re going to wallow in this album’s delicious shimmering guitars and smoothly undulating rhythms. Langford has one of those ultra-scrumptious voices, the kind that bore into your soul, sweet and high and evocative.

From a purely subjective viewpoint, highlights on the album include “Painted Lady,” a winding, dripping tune with crying guitars and an infectious thrumming rhythm, akin to Bob Dylan going full-out country. I love the guitar solo on this track, infusing the tune with cool jangly inflections, tantalizing and full of beau coup nuanced twangs.

“Coattails” rides gently gleaming guitars recalling The Allman Brothers, silky yet crawling with oozing flows of cashmere textures and flooding washes of color. A rolling rhythm, almost lingering, provides the tune’s foundation, escorting the delectably trickling guitars.

“Growing Up” rides darker colors, radiating emerging tantalizing surface flavors traveling on a simple yet potent rhythmic pulse. There’s an elusive familiarity to this tune, as it worms it way into your ears. “Keep Your Diamonds” travels on a listing drum shuffle topped by glistening wonderfully seeping guitars.

The final track, “Sing My Own Love Song,” glows with tender glimmering guitar riffs, spreading burnished almost tarnished hues across the soundscape.

With Two Hearted Rounder, Sarah Lee Langford delivers one of the best alt-country albums of the year, hands down.
