“Home” is about the pliability of memory offered en deux moitiés distinctes, akin to a musical Janus, looking to the past and present. One part is indietronic, while the other incorporates brawny post-grunge garage rock flavors. It's an ambitious undertaking which Lylyly pulls off with aplomb.

The band’s distinctive name – Lylyly – embraces a number of possible meanings: as an extension of the name Lyly, it means “popular.” In the lingua franca of texting, it means “love you, love you, love you.” And in gangsta lingo the term refers to something that’s “the shizzit.”

Founded by songwriter/visual artist Emily Mineo (vocals, guitar), the rest of the band’s lineup includes Josh Zenker (bass), Kelvin Cochrane (guitar), and Jared Williams (drums). Having performed at Philadelphia’s World Café Live, Ortlieb’s, and DIY spaces, Lylyly’s sound blends elements of pop-rock and garage-rock into music rife with buff energy.

Wrought with precision, the result is a superb blend of musical finesse. Lylyly is definitely the shizzit!

The beginning of “Home” is cerebral and gentle, riding an austerely oozing synth punctuated by burbling effects. Mineo’s voice, crystalline and sylph-like, wavers overhead, projecting elusive, tantalizing timbres.

As the music continues there is an enormous sonic force that supplants the cerebral, with muscular guitars and dark, dirty colors, as Mineo’s voice takes on tight, penetrating tones, infusing the tune with impressive cogency and strident urgency.

The lyrics speak to the inner dialogue we hold with ourselves as we reconcile our perceptions of the past with the realities of the present.

“Home / I’ll go home / If you’re not home / Have you even been here / Long / So long ago / Echoes in your heart / Silence in your ear / Every time you looked / Every time you looked at something else / The corners of your mind / Corners of your mind / They show themselves / One / By one / You’re letting go.”

With “Home,” Lylyly juxtaposes the psychic aura of times past with the turbulence and intractability of present circumstances. Wrought with precision, the result is a superb blend of musical finesse. Lylyly is definitely the shizzit!
