WALT DISCO FLAUNT FLAMBOYANCE ON ‘HEY BOY (YOU’RE ONE OF US)’

Fronted by James Power (vocals), Walt Disco is made up of Dave Morgan (keyboards), Finlay McCarthy (bass), Lewis Carmichael (guitar), Charlie Lock (guitar), and Jack Martin (drums).

Explaining “Hey Boy,” the band says, "We wrote this song around a hypothetical situation about teaching a man to come to terms with his feminine side and that it wouldn't devalue the parts of him that are male, but would make him feel more free and help his relationships with others. We obviously had a lot of fun writing it and sometimes the lyrics get a bit kinky, but such is life."

Talking about the video, vocalist extraordinaire James Power shares, “The video’s very loose concept was that I was sort of a mermaid/sea-dweller who was toying with the idea of becoming a land creature, using this to relate exploring gender within myself. The main goal of the video was to make something fun that was also sexy and could again include the members of the band who weren’t isolating together. For two separate days, I froze my nipples off at the beach in Troon and none of it would have been possible without the help of our lovely flat-mates Ally Scott of Lucia and The Best Boys and Anna Acquroff of Medicine Cabinet. As with the ‘Cut Your Hair’ video, our shaky iPhone footage was masterfully pieced together by Bryan M Ferguson.”

Brimming with suggestive dignified brio, “Hey Boy (You’re One of Us)” displays the potently glossy, highflying gift of Walt Disco.

Opening on a kitschy braying organ reminiscent of a Four Square Gospel church service, “Hey Boy’s” baroque-flavored hymnal vocals infuse the lyrics with goody-goody aromas. Then a rumbling drum shuffle enters, flowing into a retro new wave melody dripping over-the-top coloration.

Power’s deliciously grandiose voice exaggerated, overtly sensual, and alluringly charming, imbues the lyrics with beaucoup panache-laced timbres, glittering with brilliant sonic allusions.

“Black leather, magazines / Locked away inside your dreams / We’ll teach you the ways of  / Red velvet, double cream / You know your baby wants a queen / We’ll teach you the ways of  / Not being afraid of One of us!”
