Formed in 1986 in Boston, the Pixies were made up of Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal, and David Lovering. The band dissolved in 1993, and got back together in 2004. Deal left the band in 2013, replaced by Kim Shattuck, who was shortly thereafter superseded by Paz Lenchantin.

The Pixies’ signature sound embraces sonic shifts from loud to quiet. Jason Cohen of Spin Magazine succinctly summed up the band’s sound, writing, "Surf music-meets-Stooges spikiness and oft-imitated stop/start and quiet/loud dynamics.”

The lyrics to "Catfish Kate" reflect the band’s familiar surreal aspects: “Call me devil call me friend but call me Black Jack Hooligan / I came all the way from Aberdeen to live among the go-betweens / Let me tell you tell you about Catfish Kate in the time before when she’s just Kate / Here in the mountains all alone before the time we called this home / Where is my angel fallen down at the river bottom and will she get away? / Where is my Blackfoot blossom is she just playing possum who lives another day?”

“Catfish Kate” is delightful, alluring, and captivating, full of tasty vocals, glistening guitars, a compelling rhythm, and an irresistible sonic structure.

Opening on shimmering guitars, “Catfish Kate” flows into a deliciously-flavored alt-rock melody full of a willowy bassline and tight percussion. When the harmonics ramp up on the chorus, the song takes on robust resonance and gleaming textures topped by wonderful vocal harmonies.

The animated video, created by Neirin Best and Lianne Pierce, is beautifully wrought, depicting Kate walking through a mountainous landscape inhabited by an assortment of strange creatures, including Black Jack Hooligan, who came to rescue Catfish Kate from her abduction by a catfish.
