MOVIE CLUB PAYS TRIBUTE TO DICK DALE ON ‘NAVY SEAL’

Surf-hop/garage rock duo Movie Club introduces the music video for their single “Navy Seal” today. The song is from their recently dropped sophomore EP, HAMMERHEAD.

“Navy Seal” pays tribute to surf guitarist Dick Dale, who coincidentally passed away on the very day Movie Club was in the studio recording the song – March 17. The video’s concept required some expertise, so Movie Club approached renowned Venice Beach street artist Muck Rock if she would participate.

Her response: “Find a wall.”

The son of the proprietor of Davey Jones Liquor Locker volunteered the outside wall, upon which Muck Rock proceeded to work her artistic magic. Surf videographer Michael Veltman provided the marvelous surf footage for the video.

“Navy Seal” is scorching surf rock at its best, full of supercharged dynamism, hormonal exuberance, and guitar virtuosity so buff it hurts.

Composed of Vince Cuneo (guitar) and Jessamyn Violet (drums), the genesis of Movie Club took place in October 2018, when Cuneo and Violet put together a set for a pre-Cal Jam bash at Fonogenic Studios, owned by Rami Jaffee of Foo Fighters. As Dave Grohl barbecued on the studio’s patio, Movie Club shared the stage with Robbie Krieger, guitarist of The Doors.

Movie Club’s set blew the audience away. Inspired by the reception, they went to work on their debut EP, Kraken, releasing it three months later to vast critical acclaim.

Amalgamating elements of funk, surf rock, and garage rock into a starkly muscular sound, Movie Club’s music exudes a visceral sonic punch of Jovian potency, tantalizing and elusively familiar, yet full of primal textures and grand electrifying projection.

“Navy Seal” opens on a raw searing guitar riding finessed skintight drumming, as Violet establishes the driving rhythm, along with a fat bassline. Flavored with sizzling surf tones, and beau coup piercing impetus, Cuneo’s brilliant licks inject the harmonics with palpable energy, taut glistening colors, and exquisitely subtle surface timbres.
