JACK KEYES DROPS CHARISMATIC 'TO THE MOON'

Louisville, Kentucky-based indie-folk artist Jack Keyes recently released “To The Moon,” a track lifted from his forthcoming full-length debut album, The Moon Is Too High. A getaway album, it recognizes the universal longing to be anywhere but where we are.

Jack explains, “This album, as a whole, deals with themes of ‘getting out’ of circumstances you don’t want to be in. It feels timely. There is a lot of escapism in the lyrics.”

Speaking about the inspiration for “To The Moon,” he shares, “When I wrote this song, I was thinking specifically about my grandmother who passed away a few years ago. She struggled with some personal issues, and I wanted to write a song about loving someone who makes mistakes that hurt you.”

Produced by Paul Kintzing of German Error Message, along with Jack, “To The Moon” was recorded at Kintzing’s house and features Jack Keyes on guitar and vocals, along with Kintzing handling percussion. Mixed by Kintzing, the song was mastered by Carl Saff.

Jack’s sound is warm and soulful, with a subtle edge.

For Jack, it all began when he was in middle school. Grammy-winning producer Joe Henry, aka Jack’s godfather and pen pal, sent him an acoustic guitar. Immediately upon the instrument’s arrival, Jack sat down and started learning chords and writing songs.

Citing a variety of influences, such as the Beach Boys, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, and, most significant, his experiences teaching writing to sophomore high school students in Nashville, Jack’s sound is warm and soulful, with a subtle edge.

“To The Moon” opens on lightly sparkling guitar tones riding a steadily thumping rhythmic beat. Jack’s voice, vaguely reminiscent of John Mayer, hushed and breathy, only more expressive and nuanced, infuses the lyric with tender, tantalizing wisps of recollection as he narrates the mysterious miracle of love for another human being.

“You didn’t win the lotto scratch / You stole the doc’s prescription pads / And even when you refill / I love you still.”

At once low-slung and gorgeously textured, “To The Moon” highlights the mellow, melodic allure of the voice of Jack Keyes.
