Hey Cowboy! - Sandy Cheeks

Meet Hey Cowboy!, a synth-pop band from Denton, Texas. The trio just dropped a new EP, Sandy Cheeks.

Hey Cowboy!

Describing themselves as “3 cowgals from Texas making synthpop music,” Hey Cowboy! released their EP, The Soft Kind, at the beginning of 2018, followed by a two track demo in July 2018.

Comprising Micah Vargas (bass), Sydney Harding-Sloan (synth), and Gaby Rodriguez (drums), Hey Cowboy!’s sound merges punk-lite, bedroom pop, and psych-rock into edgy pop music full of ethereal streams and penetrating melodies.

Sandy Cheeks encompasses three tracks, starting with “Feelin’ For,” which opens on heavy dark colors flowing on a gliding rhythm rife with a brawny, cavernous resonance. Shimmering, spiraling synth hues pervade the backdrop with coursing tendrils of gossamer colors. Dreamy, delicious vocals infuse the yummy shuffling lyrics with silky radiance.

“Feelin' / For the ready / For the boom / For you / Feelin' / More than ready, for the boom / Feelin' more than ready / For the boom / For you.”

Hey Cowboy! has the magic touch, producing innovative, miraculous music that’s scrumptiously charming and alluring. Some label really needs to sign this band.

“Cherry Jerry Citrus” begins with a simple, yet potent drum beat followed by a bottomless bass line with a punk-like punch. Soaring, wraithlike synths inject sweeping colors, as the angelic vocals cut through the soundscape like a fingernail slicing paper. Softly luminous harmonies imbue the tune with sheens of glistening textures. This is my favorite track of the three, although all are excellent, because of its fluid, emerging movement.

The last track, “Houses,” rides a measured, throbbing bass line and snap-rattle percussion, as if the snare wires are looser than normal. An oozing synth patch drones on a horizontal tone, giving the tune harmonic dimension. Wistful vocals, like elusive and quixotic, rise with gentle shoegaze flavors.

The strange thing about the EP is its utter lack of guitars, a distinction that goes unnoticed because of the music’s lush elegant energy, both immersive and delicately complex.
