New York’s Fahiel recently dropped her new EP, called Fahiel.jpg.

Describing her sound as “pop music for sleep girls,” Fahiel, aka Robin Schnepf, wrote and performed all the songs on the EP, which was co-edited and produced by Will Bowman.

I found the EP during one of my deep sea dives through Bandcamp’s ‘New Arrivals,” in the subsection entitled “Dream-pop.” There’s a wealth of new singles, EPs, and albums on Bandcamp, and they arrive daily. Frankly, most are lackluster at best, but every now and then my musical excavations result in newfound treasures.

Fahiel.jpg comprises four-tracks, starting off with “Rest Cure,” which opens on eerie creaking sounds akin to a horror flick, and then flows into sparkling synths, light and delicately flavored. Fahiel’s voice, full of retro-classical crystal-like tones delivers scrumptious church-like timbres, compact and almost chanting-like.

“I wonder! / I begin to think! / I wish John would take me from here! / Secure ancestral halls for the summer / Still declare there’s something queer about it.”

I love the strident colors and skintight glowing energy of Fahiel’s voice on this track.

“Well Spoken Girl” travels on deep droning flavors atop a syncopated rhythm topped by oscillating synths. Fahiel’s dreamy, haunted tones imbue the lyrics with a tight eccentric tension.

“A well-spoken girl / doesn’t speak to me / drinking her green tea / it’s more of a frame / than a pane of glass / but when she feels free / I can hear her mind / and that’s all i can hope to find / too bad we couldn’t have aligned.”

The intro to “Capricorn” rides a thumping kick-drum and teeter-tottering synths seguing to glittering, almost delicate streams of softly oozing colors. The Spartan flavor of the tune is deliciously surreal, as if she’s in her room alone, practicing.

“I Face This” features roiling synths, syncopated percussion, and gospel-like two-part vocal harmonies. I love the strident colors and skintight glowing energy of Fahiel’s voice on this track.

Fahiel.jpg is sui generis, innovative, and demonstrates commanding creativity, as well as the glass-like prismatic voice of Fahiel.
