Canadian alt-pop singer Dani Le Rose unleashed a new music video just a few minutes ago. It’s called “Shell Shock,” a song about the evolution “of women’s sexual expression, and the significant breakthrough’s we’ve witnessed throughout the last 20 years.”

In the video, directed by Bruna Arbex, the female protagonist, who, like Prometheus, aches to break free from the bonds of her humdrum, repetitious life and revel in her sexuality, cannot express her physical desires and erotic fantasies. Instead, she suppresses them, leading to frustration, anger, loathing, and, eventually, the probability of homicide.
Essentially, the video is a powerful indictment of the sexual mores superimposed on individuals by the outdated belief that sexual enjoyment is somehow immoral.
Dani Le Rose grew up in a small town in Alberta, Canada, where at an early age she was immersed in dance, voice, and piano. When she was nine-years-old she began writing original music. By the time she was 12, she was performing at talent shows. Later, she taught herself to play the guitar. Comprehension that Alberta was a dead end musically, she moved to Toronto, and ensconced herself in the recording studio, enhancing her skills while working with other artists.

It paid off big-time. Soon she was sharing the stage with Matthew Good, Zella Day, Elle King, X Ambassadors, Divine Brown, and Young Empires. In 2017, the WCMA nominated her for Best Urban Artist of the Year, and her single, “Cruel,” was featured in Galore Magazine.
Opening on shimmering, shooting synths, “Shell Shock” rides a potent, dark alt-pop melody. A reverberating bass line and austere, yet skintight drums propel the rhythmic pulse, as Le Rose’s sensuous, breathy tones infuse the lyrics with bravura eroticism and voluptuous flashes simmering with carnal heat.
