Australia’s punk rock outfit Charlie Rebel just dropped a new LP, called The People’s Republic of Earth, via Human Records.

As I write this, the band is launching the album at Vinnies Dive on the Gold Coast, followed by setting off on their 12-show tour of Japan, including performances in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, and Kobe.

Made up of the Torr brothers, Nick (guitar) and Chris (drums), as well as Guy Cooper (bass), the new album, according to Charlie Rebel, is about “breaking free from oppression and taking control of life, getting back up and screaming out for what you want and creating your own future.”

In the best punk tradition, Charlie Rebel is fed up with the political agendas pervading Australia, including zero climate policy, love of coal and fossil fuels, children on Nauru, and the rising tide of white supremacy in the Land Down Under. “The only answer seems to be for us to all stand up and scream like a goanna on the Nullarbor for what is right!”

Entry points on the album include “Uncommon Law,” with its deliciously reverberating intro full of rolling booming drums and snarling riffs.

The album takes in 10-tracks. First up is “Painted Numbers,” opening on oscillating colors atop a thumping kick drum flowing into a tight, jangly pop-punk number. I like the tight, flat crack of the snare on this track and the rumbling thunderous feel of the chorus.

Entry points on the album include “Uncommon Law,” with its deliciously reverberating intro full of rolling booming drums and snarling riffs. Once the punk melody settles in, the harmonics achieve a potent suffusion of both dark and light hues, with the emphasis on the more opaque washes. I love the breakdown, with its burning lingering guitar tones.

“Kid” offers up another marvelous intro, rife with heavy drums exuding rich round tones, as the tom-toms prevail. Radiant vocal harmonies infuse the tune with cool, affluent sonority. “Can’t Stop Me It’s Christmas” rides muddy guitars and a chop-stick like piano. The harmonics surge with energy, as the vocals deliver tasty, fun tones.

Charlie Rebel pumps out muscular fields of harmonic energy on The People’s Republic of Earth. It’s easy to see why the band has an international following.
