7 POP-PUNK SONGS YOU NEED TO HEAR

Sweet Pill - Lost In It

Here's a list of seven pop-punk songs you need to hear. Most of these bands are relatively unknown on a national or international level, but should be.

Mad Snake

Mad Snake – “Walls”

Australia’s Mad Snake drops their new EP, Bored & Wasted, April 15, featuring five original tracks and the band’s cover of Grinspoon’s “More Than You Are.”

Mad Snake’s pop-punk sound exudes hints of grunge. The band is made up of members of Rage, a hardcore outfit, with vocals provided by the front man of I The Hunter.

Broadsword – “Novel”

Broadsword cuts loose on their new EP, Greek. The band is from New Jersey and that’s all I know about them. But hey, they play good music!

Let’s Go – “Hasn’t Happened Yet”

A pop-punk outfit from Kamloops, British Columbia, known as Let’s Go just dropped Almost Ready, a tasty four-track EP that, according to BC’s Best Live Music is the band’s debut EP.

Defender Grade – “Dude, Where’s My Heart?”

Yay! A California band makes the list. Called Defender Grade, this Calaveras County pop-punk outfit is made up of Brandon (vocals, guitar), Cody (bass, backing vocals), and Kyle (drums, backing vocals).

According to the band, they write “songs about sad shit in a happy way.” Their latest EP is called Movie Night With.

Sweet Pill – “Swallow The Pill”

Philly’s Sweet Pill just released Lost In It, encompassing 5-tracks of pop-flavored pop-punk. The band played SXSW in March, and is composed of Zayna Youssef on vocals, Jayce Williams on guitar and glockenspiel, Ian Bley on bass, and Stephen Kummer on drums or as I like to say, “sits in the pocket.”

Sweet Pill’s sound is captivating primarily because of Youssef’s distinctive voice.

Tim McCullough – “In Her Eyes”

From Shelbyville, Kentucky, Tim McCullough’s latest EP is entitled Home to You. Once again, nada info about Tim and/or the band, if it is a band, and not just one dude. Anyway, I love the tight, rough guitars and rasping vocals.

A Time To Stand – “PB City Winter Blues”

Hailing from Paderborn, Germany, A Time To Stand punches out muscular pop-punk. Their latest album is Light Years, featuring 14-tracks. This band formed in 2010, and then went through beau coup personnel changes over the next few years, almost completely dissolving. But they stayed the course and are back at it.
