WHITNEY TAI RELEASES DAZZLING ‘APOGEE’

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Whitney Tai releases her new album, entitled Apogee, June 5. The album premiered a few days ago on v13, where Christopher Gonda had this to say: “This is an important release for Tai, not only because she pushed herself well outside of her previous musical boundaries, but also because it helped her to become a better version of herself.”

First off, let me just say this is a wonderfully wrought album, incorporating a variety of stylistic elements such as dream-pop, electro-pop, alt-rock, R&B, and aromas of gospel. The only track that didn’t work for me is “Meet Me On Melrose,” probably because its tinny Latin-R&B melody comes across as reedy and forced rather than as sensuous.

The other nine-tracks are excellent.

My favorite track, and the one that led me to review the album, is “Righteous,” which opens on alt-rock-flavored guitars exuding retro energy, while a driving rhythm, along with gleaming synths imbue the tune with potent dream-pop savors.

Yeah, we’re righteous / To believe in a cause / That despite us / Will continue to live on / We’re righteous / We refuse to let our fears define us / Yeah, we’re righteous enough to believe.”

Whitney’s voice on this track is both exquisitely textured and simply gorgeous. I love the “ah-oh-oh” harmonies.

Other entry points include “Scolded,” with its layers of surging surface hues. Whitney’s voice on this track is both exquisitely textured and simply gorgeous. I love the “ah-oh-oh” harmonies.

“Electrified” rides oscillating electro-pop coloration, soft yet glistening with a radiant aura as Whitney’s tones assume delicate crystalline timbres.

When I think of how you make me feel inside

“I feel electrified / When I dream of all the times we laughed and cried / I feel electrified / When I wake up / There’s a million reasons why / I feel electrified / We are electrified.”

“Incantation,” featuring Emer Kinsella travels on elegant shimmers of dream-pop, and then ramps up to grand suffusions of sound.

With Apogee, Whitney Tai delivers tantalizing wisps of surface pigments, drifting, cogent, and mesmerizing, all crowned by her superb vocals.
