Sluka - Colorful Radiation

Sluka is fucking ridiculous. That's my main takeaway from briefly delving into his work. The self-proclaimed "groovy goth rocker" is going on tour, mostly in his home state of California, perhaps the one place where a groovy goth doesn't stick out (other than maybe Portland, but I may just be basing that on the goth characters from Portlandia), in support of his previously-released album Colorful Radiation.

There is so much sincerity, admirable sincerity perhaps, but also enough cheese for a large pizza.

This dude, whose full name is Christopher Sluka, decided to get a pilot's license because Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden is a pilot. That probably tells you everything you need to know. If it doesn't, you can watch the video for "Number One," the lead single from Colorful Radiation. The song is weird. It's a joke, literally. The whole thing is couched in irony, but Sluka clearly takes himself incredibly seriously. He kind of reminds me of people who make those terrible movies that end up on Mystery Science Theater 3000. There is so much sincerity, admirable sincerity perhaps, but also enough cheese for a large pizza.

I don't really like the song, and it was enough to make me lose any interest in further Sluka listening. I did chuckle at the video a bit, but perhaps not in the way the man intended. I hate to be another guy ragging on goths, and I'm not anti-goth. I just find this video so silly. Hey, as long as Sluka is happy doing his thing, I guess. If you like groovy goths who make mediocre music, you can always check him out on tour.
