Nocturnal Animals - Writing on the Walls

I'm annoyed at Nocturnal Animals. The promo material for the band said the song "Margot" from their upcoming EP Writing on the Walls described it as "indie pop rock perfection." That intrigued me. Sure, they then compared the band to Arctic Monkeys and Panic! At the Disco, and the latter is not indie rock, or indie pop, at all. Nevertheless, indie rock and indie pop are my two favorite genres. I was looking forward to checking it out, as well as the rest of the EP.

I think this band is really bad.

First, Nocturnal Animals is not indie. They do not have that sound at all. Now, you may want to argue about what constitute indie rock, and about the defining traits of genre. That can get muddy. I get it. So let me just say this instead: this EP sucks. I think this band is really bad. Their instrumentation is lame, unpleasant, and annoying. The singer's voice bothers me. The lyrics don't grab me at all. They don't remind of of Arctic Monkeys. They remind me of bands like Buckcherry and Lit, those weird fucking rock bands who seemed to want to be Motley Crue after we all realized that shit was ridiculous. I was legitimately annoyed by Writing on the Walls. It's sound was like poison to my ear. I know I sound harsh, and I am not attacking the people in the band. Maybe they are nice guys. If so, they are nice guys who make music I think is total garbage.

And if they had no say in that promotional wording, that's not on them. Whoever decided to call "Margot" "indie pop rock perfection" is providing false advertising.
