ANCIENT WHALES RELEASE ‘VESTIGES OF TAILS APPEAR IN ALL OF US’

Moments ago, garage-rock/punk/indie-rock outfit Ancient Whales released a new album via Owlphabet Records, entitled Vestiges of Tails Appear in All of Us, a collaboration between Enoch Bledsoe, Natalie Bledsoe, and Oakley Munson.

Recorded in Asheville, North Carolina, by Ryan J. Rapsys, the album takes a simple approach to life, deconstructing cultural covenants and probing essential human beliefs in a gentle, satisfying manner. Ancient Whales eschew nasty emotions like hate and promote love.

Except for Enoch and Natalie, Ancient Whales’ lineup constantly changes, adding a series of talented musicians as guests – for example, Bryan Poole (Of Montreal, The Late B.P. Helium) and Shaun Ringsmuth (Street Sects). The band has performed at Athen’s Popfest, Athfest, Chattanooga’s Do Ya Hear We fest, and Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim show Bloodfeast.

The band has shared the stage with The Nude Party, Caroline Rose, Axxa/Abraxas, Babe Rainbow, The Shine Brothers, The Humms, Greg Cartwright of Reigning Sound, Anwar Sadat, Allah-Las, Mr. Elevator, and The Brain Hotel, Ghost Wolves, DJ Jared Swilley (of Black Lips), Thelma and the Sleaze and a host of others.

“Giving,” a personal favorite, features granular powerful guitars delivering punk energy fused with tiny hints of surf rock, lowdown, and brawny.

Encompassing a baker’s dozen of tracks, the album begins with “Stick and Poke,” opening on a rolling snare flowing into a raw, edgy punk-flavored melody full of grainy guitars riding a propulsive rhythm, as Jack White-like vocals infuse the lyrics with visceral tones.

Highlights on the album include “To Be,” a grunged-out punk song atop mega-dirty guitars while surging uncooked vocals spill out overhead. “Giving,” a personal favorite, features granular powerful guitars delivering punk energy fused with tiny hints of surf rock, lowdown, and brawny.

“Time” travels on stridently enflamed guitars supported by a straight-ahead driving rhythm. “Saturday Morning” dishes out punk and new wave textures, grimy and bleeding, as if The Cure decided to cover The Clash.

“EA” offers delicious flavors of punk and surf rock rolling out with punchy, stripped-down dynamics. Another favorite is ‘Raunchy,” a tune chock-full of surf rock aromas, punk, and vague tints of country rock-a-billy.

On Vestiges of Tails Appear in All of Us, Ancient Whales push out ripping, bloody garage rock heaving with muddy colors, and beaucoup oomph.
